Provide Feedback: 2022 weight management EAL Systematic Review Project Team proposed guidelines

The weight management EAL Systematic Review Project Team recently updated proposed guidelines for Medical Nutrition Therapy Interventions for Adult Overweight and Obesity Treatment and have asked for feedback from nutrition and health professionals along with the community at large.

The Academy has been receiving some negative response, because many RDs believe some of these recommendations do not align with the current mission statements of the Academy and could conflict with initiatives to create diversity, equity, and inclusion. Specifically, the guidelines include calorie restriction (as little as 1200 kcal per day for an adult) and recommend against using HAES and anti-diet approaches, while continuing to use BMI as a key health indicator, despite many challenges to its validity. They also fail to include any mention of Standards of Practice and Professional Performance for the Treatment of Eating Disorders. Many RDs feel the new guidelines are not in line with the Academy’s vision by excluding people in diverse bodies and promoting a weight-centered approach to healthcare.

Please see the guidelines here and share your thoughts by completing the survey by 3/25/22 https://www.andeal.org/public-comment-guideline-review
